Whether you are a single parent who may not be able to give your child the time and attention you think he or she needs; or your feel your child is going through a difficult time and it’s hard for you to communicate with him or her; or you sense that your child is lonely and needs a self-esteem boost, Big Brothers Big Sisters can help by matching your child with a positive adult mentor your child can confide in and trust.
There is no charge to enroll your child--simply call the Big Brothers Big Sisters office at (217) 753-1216 and we will mail you an application. Once we receive your returned application, Our Enrollment Specialist will schedule an interview to meet with you and your child. Once approved, your child will be placed on our waiting list until the right person comes through as a volunteer whom we think will make a great Big Brother or Big Sister for your child. All of our volunteers are carefully screened, and once matched, both the child and volunteer receive match support through case management.
We recommend that your child spend on average 10-14 hours a month with his or her Big Brother or Big Sister for a minimum of one year. Activities can range from going out in the community to hanging out at the volunteer’s house playing games or baking cookies. Our volunteers are not paid and are not obligated to pay for your child’s activities. We encourage you to plan free or low-cost activities, and whenever possible to help pay for your child’s admission to activities such as bowling, skating or movies. The Big Brothers Big Sisters agency also hosts activities for Bigs and Littles.
- The child’s age at the time of the application is between 5 and 14.
- The child resides in Sangamon, Christian or Montgomery Counties.
- The child’s guardian or parent must schedule the appointment and be supportive of the match and our program philosophies.
If you are interested in enrolling your child in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program or would like information, please complete the enrollment form and a member of our staff will contact you to set up an appointment.
